A new 3CX Android client is in BETA

Last week 3CX released a new BETA version of their Android app, available from the Google play store.

The new version of the 3CX Android app addresses a number or issues, including those related to PUSH calls. Android users now have the ability to have PUSH notifications enabled across multiple devices for the one extension – so no matter what device you’re using at the time you can still receive calls and messages.

There were also known crashes that have been addressed in the 3CX Android update ensuring that all features of the app will work seamlessly.

Extra features and visual improvements were included in this BETA update, our personal favourites including:

“Exit Confirmation” when pressing the “Back” button.

I don’t know about you, but my fingers can tend to move too fast for my brain, and I find myself exiting apps without the confirmation, occasionally losing (and forgetting) what I was doing.

Partial Matching

In a world of auto-complete, this is an obvious time-saver and improvement.

Battery Saving

Feature-rich apps such as the 3CX Android client often drain your battery, and when you’re bouncing between meetings or locations, very rarely do you have the opportunity to stop and charge it. Thankfully, 3CX have addressed this and have made a number of changes to ensure your battery life is preserved, without sacrificing functionality.

Better UI/ UX

3CX have made many minor adjustments to the look of the Android app, including increasing the size of the top menu bar, search fields, text in the bottom menu and more. While these may seem like smaller changes, they definitely help in readability, usability and make for a nicer feel of the app as a whole.

3CX has made many subtle improvements to the Android client in this BETA update, however they all add up to be a robust, intuitive and good-looking app. As more people opt for the smart phone clients in the interest of flexibility, I believe we can expect the 3CX smart phone clients to continue to improve and have more features and functionality added.

The end of last week saw a new update to the 3CX Android app, improving on stability, usability & Bluetooth headset support.

Improved Android Integration

3CX Android integration has definitely taken a leap in this recent update – making the app feel like part of the original UI.

Upon updating you’ll notice that 3CX will ask for permission to access your contacts, combining 3CX with your standard contacts list. Now instead of flipping between your contacts list and 3CX app (or struggling with split-screen), you can call anyone on your contacts list via 3CX with one button.

Continuing on the integration with your Android contacts list; when you dial a number from the 3CX app the contact information will display if you have that number saved in your phone.

The improvements to 3CX Android integration have made it much simpler to use the app as naturally as you would use your stock standard calling features on a smartphone.

Bluetooth Support

This update has introduced the new, experimental feature “Car/ Bluetooth Support”.

The following devices have this feature turned on by default:

Nexus 5X & 6P
Pixel & Pixel 2, Pixel XL & Pixel 2 XL
All OnePlus
All Huawei

3CX states on their blog that the option is switched off by default for Samsung devices, however the feature is still available by selecting this option.

You can find the “Car/ Bluetooth Support” option by navigating:

“Settings” > “Advanced”

There are a number of known issues and limitations for the current release, and you can view those here.

All in all, the app seems to have integrated well with the new features that have been added. The app certainly does seem faster and more fluid in use, but this may vary by phone.

Introduction

Initiate and receive office calls from your own extension from your Android mobile with minimal hassle and no extra cost. The 3CX Android app allows for features included on the desktop version including conference calls, view and update status and transference of calls regardless of where you are.

System Requirements

Installation

Open the Google Play store and search “3CX“
Tap “Install“ and accept application rights. The Android 3CX phone system will be downloaded and automatically installed. Once the installation process has completed, you will have to “agree” to the License Agreement.
Follow instructions provided in the configuration wizard.
Open your 3CX phone system web client, and click on your profile picture. Select “Scan QR Code” from the drop down menu that will appear.
Open your Android 3CX phone system and scan the QR code on your web client by going to “Settings > QR Provisioning”. After this your 3CX app will be automatically configured.
When configuration is complete, you will see the “Available” status on the dial screen. You will now be able to make calls on your Android device.

Settings

You can personalise your 3CX Android client by accessing the settings through:
“More” > “Settings”

Accounts: Select, edit, remove or add accounts. Do not modify these settings unless advised to do so by your administrator.

Audio Options: Default audio options are usually already optimised, however should you require any additional changes there are 3 audio options:

Echo Cancellation: Minimise echo during calls

Silence Detection: Data will not be sent when the 3CX phone system detects silence. This conserves bandwidth but may also impact call quality when activated.

Microphone Gain: Amplify volume of your voice through your microphone.

Microphone Source: The microphone might not work in the default “Advanced mode” in some devices. Switching to “Basic mode” will enable it.

Audio Subsystem: The default option is “OpenSL”. If you experience audio issues, switch to “Java”.

Advanced Settings:

Local SIP Port: Default port is empty. Please contact your administrator if you would like to change this.

Lock Wi-Fi: Ensure Wi-Fi remains on when screen is turned off so you are able to receive incoming calls in the background.

Enable 3G: Allow Android 3CX phone system to connect to 3G when Wi-Fi is not available.

Full Screen: Hide Android status bar.

Proximity Sensor: The Android 3CX phone system will turn off the phone display during a call when you put your phone to your ear (if Android phone has inbuilt proximity sensor).

Keypad Tone: Android 3CX phone system will play dial tones when dialing a number.

Use System Ringtone: Set a different ringtone.

Vibrate: Enable phone to vibrate when receiving calls.

Verbose Logging: Logs debugging information to be submitted to the support team.

Send Log Report: Send a report to 3CX support to troubleshoot issues.
